The moment we knew something had to change
It started with a billing dispute.
Priya had been teaching yoga for eleven years. She ran morning Vinyasa classes out of a rented studio in Melbourne and evening sessions over Zoom for students across three time zones. By any measure, her practice was thriving โ until the platform she relied on charged her $347 in a month she took two weeks off for a family emergency.
The support ticket took nine days to resolve. The refund never came.
When Priya told that story at a local yoga teacher meetup, half the room raised their hands. They had similar stories. Too-high monthly fees. Opaque billing. Complex software that required a tutorial just to create a new class. Platforms designed for franchise gyms, not independent teachers.
I was in that room. I had spent the previous decade building software products โ mostly for enterprise clients who would never feel the pinch of a $347 bill. Hearing Priya's story, I thought: this problem is completely solvable. The technology is not complicated. What's complicated is caring enough to get the details right.
What "mumokshu" means
In Sanskrit, *mumokshu* describes someone earnestly seeking liberation โ specifically, a sincere student on the path toward freedom, not freedom as an abstract idea, but as a daily orientation. The word carries no ego, no hierarchy. It applies equally to a first-time meditator and a lifelong practitioner.
We chose that name because it captures both sides of our platform: the student who shows up with genuine intention, and the teacher who holds space for that journey. Software should serve both โ not get in the way of either.
What we built (and what we deliberately didn't)
Mumokshu is booking software, a marketplace, a scheduling tool, a membership manager, and a corporate wellness channel โ all in one place. But we made specific choices about what *not* to build.
We don't charge flat monthly fees. We don't lock you into contracts. We don't own your student data. We don't take 30% of every transaction.
We charge 15% on completed bookings. That's it. If a class has zero students, you pay nothing. Your revenue scales linearly with our revenue โ we only win when you win.
We built a free tier that isn't crippled. Independent teachers with a small following should have access to the same professional tools as established studios. A teacher with twenty dedicated students and a teacher with two thousand are both doing meaningful work.
The first year
The first version launched in March 2025. It was rough. The import tool broke on certain Mindbody CSV formats. The mobile calendar didn't render correctly on older Android phones. We shipped fixes weekly, sometimes daily.
What surprised us was how quickly a community formed around the feedback. Teachers sent us detailed bug reports with screenshots. Students wrote in to say a class had changed their life. Corporate wellness managers โ a segment we hadn't fully anticipated โ asked us whether we could run company-wide challenges.
We listened to all of it.
Where we're going
Today Mumokshu supports over fifty wellness disciplines, live and on-demand classes, in-studio and virtual formats, gift cards, space rental, workshops, and a growing corporate channel. Teachers in twenty-three countries have processed bookings through the platform.
We're still a small team. We still respond to every support request personally. And we still believe the best software is the kind that disappears into the background โ so teachers can focus on teaching, and students can focus on showing up.
Priya's classes are on Mumokshu now. She told us last month she spent more time on her mat this year than in any year since she started teaching.
That's why we built this.
